Dental implants are an increasingly popular restorative dentistry treatment. If you are missing one or more teeth, the dental implants procedure may be an ideal option for you.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are durable, natural-looking replacements for missing teeth. A dental implant is comprised of an artificial root that holds an artificial tooth in place in the same way a real tooth would be held in place. Dental implant posts can also be used to secure partial or full dentures.

What is involved in having dental implants placed?

The dental implants procedure is typically completed in two steps. During the first step, surgery is performed to put the implant post in place in the jawbone. After healing has occurred, the second phase is completed. During this second step, the post is topped by the artificial tooth.

Is the procedure painful?

During the procedure, most patients utilize some form of sedation dentistry in conjunction with traditional pain relievers to maximize comfort. There may be some mild post-operative discomfort, but an over-the-counter pain reliever should relieve any pain you might experience.

What will my mouth look like during treatment?

During treatment the cosmetic dentist will likely give you a transitional prosthesis that will look good while you are waiting for your dental implants to be completed.
