What causes gum disease? It is simply a one-word answer. Plaque causes gum disease. Plaque is the bacterial substances that grow between your teeth and gums. If it is left in that area, it causes inflammation or swelling of the gums, bleeding of the gums, and that bacteria actually goes to work and eats the bone away. When you eat the bone away, you have periodontal disease.
